On the evening of October 23, 1956, several thousand students gathered at the Bem József statue in Budapest to read a list of sixteen demands to the Hungarian government, and by morning the crowd was past a hundred thousand and Soviet tanks had begun firing. The immediate spark was a solidarity march with the Polish workers of Poznań, whose June 28, 1956 strike had shown that Soviet tanks were not automatic. The deeper causes were years of Stalinist rule under Mátyás Rákosi, economic stagnation — the political opening created by Khrushchev’s secret speech of February 25, 1956 denouncing Stalin.
The structural causes were years in the making. Mátyás Rákosi, the Hungarian party leader from 1948 to 1956, had run the most Stalinist regime in Eastern Europe. Forced collectivization broke the peasantry. The trial of László Rajk in 1949, a show execution of a former communist, demoralized the party faithful. The ÁVH secret police built a surveillance state whose denunciations touched almost every family. The economy, lavishly subsidized by Moscow, did not deliver rising living standards.
Stalin’s death in March 1953 had opened a small space. Imre Nagy, the reformist who became prime minister in July 1953, was a genuine believer in a Hungarian road to socialism. He released political prisoners, slowed collectivization, and tolerated debate. The party hardliners, led by Rákosi, outmaneuvered him in 1955 and expelled him from the central committee.
Khrushchev’s secret speech of February 25, 1956, denouncing Stalin’s crimes, was the turning point. Circulated in millions of copies across the bloc, it legitimized every criticism the Hungarians had long whispered.
